Did you turn off the little pop-up help tips? Aura yells at you for like seven straight pages of text full of links and highlights explaining how to get the mission objective in painfully, painfully minute detail that almost amounts to reaching through your screen and shoving your mouse-hand around to save you muscle activity.
And this is the old version of the tutorial I'm talking about, the new versions are supposed to be even more rookie-friendly.
Basically, find the little pale woman icon and make sure she's set to easy-mode you along. You probably clicked the "don't give me tips" box at some point without thinking about it, no biggie. Or if you can't find it, here's a short walk-through:
1. Find your inventory while docked in station (default hotkey Alt+C for some reason), select the item hangar, find your fitting window (Alt + F default, I want to say), drag the civilian miner from the former to the latter to equip the module.
1.b. No module in your inventory? Curse briefly, then pull up the market interface, search for "civilian min", select the cheapest mining laser that's listed as "in station", right click > purchase > confirm, then repeat step 1.
2. Go to your mission description, find the system where the mining site is supposed to be in yellow lettering, right click > set destination if it's not the system you're already in.
3. Go to that system as you were taught in the basic tutorial you did before being referred to the profession trainers.
4. Right click in space, find the entry for the mission bookmark, warp to 0
5. Kill any NPCs
6. Target appropriate asteroid, either in space or by manipulating overview settings to display asteroids and using the HUD. Approach asteroid you targeted (the name of the mineral you're seeking should be in the name). When close, activate mining laser module.
7. Wait a bit.
8. Realize that mining sucks and is boring.
9. When amount of appropriate ore needed for quest is in your ship inventory (alt+c in space for the window to check), return to station where mission was issued.
10. If necessary, move ore from ship inventory to station/item inventory (drag it around in the inventory menu while in station)
11. Click "finish mission"
12. Never mine again because even the training version of mining is terrible and you want to shoot the everloving crap out of something that can shoot back now.
13. Go to an etiquette class that covers internet forums
14. Learn to ask questions in a clear, concise manner that doesn't involve whinging about things that 99.99% of other rookies figured out with zero difficulty on their own.
15. Stop being annoying to the people that are only trying to be helpful.
